Welcome to the UAB Clinical Division of Immunology and Rheumatology

S. Louis Bridges

The UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology has been listed as one of the best clinical Rheumatology programs in the country by US News & World Report for 19 consecutive years and is internationally recognized for its dedication to pursuing new knowledge and translating research findings into more effective diagnosis and treatment of patients with rheumatic diseases. As one of the largest academic rheumatology units in the nation, the division's clinical program registers over 10,000 patient encounters annually, evaluating and treating patients with various forms of connective tissue diseases.

Since its formation in the 1950s, the UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology has represented excellence in patient care, research, and teaching.  Our faculty members have contributed substantially to the understanding of rheumatic diseases, including their pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.  In addition, we have trained clinicians, educators, and researchers who have impacted academic and clinical rheumatology.

Stunning advances in genetics, immunology, bioinformatics, epidemiology, outcomes research, drug discovery, and other fields make a career in academic rheumatology truly exciting.  UAB provides a vibrant, collegial, interactive environment for our faculty.  There is a long-standing tradition of multidisciplinary collaborations.  The combination of a superb faculty and cutting-edge clinical, educational, and patient care facilities bodes well for the continued success of rheumatology at UAB.

Vision Statement:  To become the best rheumatology center in the world for the combination of basic and clinical research, education, and patient care for rheumatic diseases.

Mission Statement:  To better understand arthritis and related conditions in order to improve diagnosis and treatment, with the ultimate goal of cure or prevention of these diseases.
