Dr. Andrei Alexandrov joined the neurology faculty on March 19, 2007 as Professor of Neurology, Director of the Division of Cerebrovascular Disease, and Director of the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Research Center. He is an international leader in Neurosonology and Nanotechnology in the evaluation and treatment of stroke and made the move to UAB from the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He spent seven years before his move to Phoenix in the outstanding Stroke Center at the University of Texas at Houston.

 

Dr. Alexandrov received his M.D. degree in 1989 from the First Moscow Medical Institute (Sechenov), and specialized in clinical neurology at the Institute of Neurology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow, Russia. He completed his fellowship training in stroke and cerebrovascular ultrasound at the University of Toronto with Dr. John Norris and at the University of Texas with Dr. James Grotta, and also received mentoring from Drs. Patrick Pullicino and Sandra Black.

 

To date, Dr. Alexandrov has published 85 original papers, 2 textbooks, 9 case reports, 78 review articles, editorials, invited publications and book chapters, and 200 abstracts presented at major scientific meetings and published in referenced journals.

 

Dr. Alexandrov has trained 25 fellows in cerebrovascular ultrasound and stroke. He serves as Director of the Neurosonology Examination of the American Society of Neuroimaging, Board member of the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL), Board member of Stroke journal of the American Heart Association, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Stroke and Journal of Neuroimaging.

 

Dr. Alexandrov holds a U.S. patent (assignee: University of Texas) and specializes in development of novel reperfusion therapies for stroke.
