Organized in 1986, the UAB Epilepsy Center is an effort of the Department of Neurology in conjunction with UAB Hospital to offer clinical, research, and education services to patients with epilepsy. Located in the Civitan International Research Center, we are one of the largest and most active centers in the country and the only one in Alabama.

It is a Level 4 Center, the highest level recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, which signifies that the UAB Epilepsy Center has the capability to diagnose and treat epilepsy using the latest and most current medical and surgical techniques available anywhere in the world.

  • The clinical acitivities consist of both outpatient and inpatient services. Outpatient facilities include specialized epilepsy clinics for children and adults, and a neurophysiology laboratory.
  • Inpatient services include the Penfield Epilepsy Service that includes a 7-bed EEG/video monitoring unit.
  • The Epilepsy Center has one of the most active surgical programs in the country.

State-of-the-art facilities and equipment are available for diagnostic studies and treatment. Intracranial electrode implantation, cortical stimulation studies, specialized EEG procedures, and a full range of conventional and special tests are available.

Treatment offered consists of new antiepileptic drug regimens, cortical resections for intractable epilepsy, palliative procedures such as corpus callosotomy and special procedures such as vagal nerve implantation.

Epilepsy vs NES Questionnaire
A study/questionnaire to assist a physician in determining whether seizure events are due to an epileptic or non-epileptic etiology.

Epilepsy Fellowship
