"Each year, $100 billion is spent on pain care, yet 40% of Americans experience daily pain, including 50million people with chronic pain and 25 million people with acute pain. The prevalence of pain has a tremendous impact on business, with an estimated annual cost of $60 billion plus in lost productivity. Despite advances in the treatment of pain, the quality of pain care remains far below the potential for optimal care, and ineffective pain treatment continues to be a growing problem in the United States. The historic progress of pain care in the United States has encountered contemporary barriers that stand in the way of common sense change, and thus, pain medicine is fragmented, unable to provide integrated, comprehensive, and longitudinally cost-effective treatment."
Pain is the most common reason to seek medical attention and chronic pain is the root cause of untold suffering, loss of income, and diminished quality of life. Proper evaluation and treatment requires a broad, comprehensive approach; understanding that it is a unique individual who is suffering; one who has particular and often wide-ranging needs.
The approach to pain management spans many medical specialties. These commonly include Neurology, Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, and Psychiatry. Many associated treatment modalities are often utilized, most often those the specialist physician is most familiar with. Because of this, how a given patient's pain is treated is often based on who he or she is referred to, rather than what may actually be the optimal treatment for that patient. It is clear that given the complex nature of chronic pain and the patients who suffer from it, a multi-specialty and comprehensive approach is required for the best outcome.
At UAB Neurology & Pain Medicine, this is our goal - to realize that each patient is unique and the requirements for the treatment of that person's pain are equally so. Each patient's past medical records are carefully evaluated to see what has already been done and what treatments have been tried (with particular emphasis on how successful they were). A careful medical history and examination will be done with emphasis on the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems. If further workup or testing is indicated, these will be ordered. With these and any other pieces of information available, a comprehensive treatment plan will be formulated. More unique to our practice is the fact that we also implement and administer this treatment plan instead of sending our patient back to the referring physician with a set of recommendations. Referrals to other specialists for particular needs (e.g., surgery, injections, physical therapy, and counseling) are also handled by us, transparent to both patient and referring physician. When we assume the pain care of a patient, we handle it all. Our goal is to provide referring physicians with a single entry point for their patients' pain care regardless of the cause or eventual treatment. Our physicians are board-certified in the treatment of pain and have the vast resources of the UAB Medical Centers at our disposal. We believe that because of these factors, our patients receive the very best chance possible to recover their lives from the crippling grip that chronic pain imposes.
