To qualify for membership to the ANA, the candidate must:

  1. Have a doctoral degree in medicine or neurological science from a qualified and recognized school, college or university.
  2. Present evidence of excellence in teaching and research in the clinical neurological sciences.
  3. Have published at least 10 scientific papers in national and international journals.

These contributions to the literature and other attainments must attest to the qualification of the nominee for Active and Corresponding membership in this, the senior society of the specialty.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements listed in the bylaws, candidates must have distinguished themselves in the field of clinical neurology or the associated neurological sciences. It is not enough to nominate those who are promising but who have not made significant contributions. The submitted scientific papers should attest to the independent scholarly production of the nominee and demonstrate that the nominee has distinguished him or herself in the neurological and/or neuroscience community. Nor is election a reward for past deeds, unless there is likelihood that he/she will continue to contribute to the body of neuroscience in the future.

New members will be inducted at the first executive session of the 134th Annual Meeting to be held in Baltimore, Maryland in October 2009.
