Professor of Ophthalmology
Biography:
Christine A. Curcio, PhD, is a native of Huntington, New York. She obtained her undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University in 1972. She attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Rochester in 1981 under the supervision of Paul Coleman, PhD. After post-doctoral work at the Boston University School of Medicine with James Hinds, PhD, she spent 6 year at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she began anatomical studies of the human retina in the laboratory of Anita Hendrickson, PhD. In 1990, Dr. Curcio joined the Department of Ophthalmology at University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, where she is now a Professor. She serves as Scientific Director and Director of Global Sight Network at the Alabama Eye Bank.
Service to Science
Dr. Curcio serves on the editorial boards of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. Current Eye Research, and Progress in Retinal and Eye Research. She is a permanent member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Eye Institute.
Personal
Dr. Curcio is married to Kenneth Sloan, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science at UAB. Together they have raised two accomplished sons, David and Peter. Dr. Curcio plays the flute and piccolo in three Birmingham-area community bands.
