Beginning with the entering 2007 medical school class, UAB School of Medicine adopted a new "integrated" curriculum that focuses on teaching the basic sciences and is organized around organ systems rather than the traditional sciences disciplines.
The objective of this new curriculum is for students to learn basic sciences in a more clinically relevant context - teaching them to think comprehensively about organ function and diseases rather than simply memorize mountains of facts. Organ-based modules will be co-directed by basic scientists and clinicians.
Students must pass Step I of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) before they are promoted to the Clerkship Phase. During the Clerkship Phase, students take core clinical clerkships and electives. Electives and individualized experience programs may be taken in a variety of locations including Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Students also are required to complete a Scholarly Activity project during their enrollment in the curriculum. In their senior year, students must pass Step II of the USMLE to graduate.
