Undergraduate Medical Education

The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education provides instructional, evaluation, and curriculum committee services encompassing the preclinical coursework and clinical experience leading to the MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree.

 

 

Programs:

MD Program
The M.D. program prepares students to practice and teach medicine primarily in clinical settings.

MD/PHD Program
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers an NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program    (MSTP), a combined M.D./Ph.D. program designed to prepare students for careers that combine laboratory investigation of disease mechanisms with the practice and teaching of clinical medicine in an academic setting.

MD/MPH Program
The MD/MPH Program prepares students for research-oriented careers as clinical investigators or for practice-related careers such as public health physicians in governmental agencies, rural health centers, or international health organizations.

Rural Medical Programs
Jointly sponsored program designed to increase the number of family-practice physicians serving rural Alabama.

Bachelor/MD Programs
Imagine being accepted to medical school before your first day of college. UAB's Early Medical School Admission Program (EMSAP) makes it possible.

Academic Governing Body within UME:

Medical Education Committee
The Medical Education Committee is comprised of faculty and students committed to helping the School of Medicine accomplish its mission in our educational program leading to the M.D. degree. This important committee is charged with oversight responsibility for the curriculum, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.


Support Services within UME include:

Basic Sciences Learning Resource Center (BSLRC)
The BSLRC provides support services for the Basic Sciences education programs of the Medical, Dental, and Optometry Schools.
