The School of Medicine at UAB is dedicated to the education of physicians and scientists in all of the disciplines of medicine and biomedical investigation for careers in practice, teaching and research. Necessary to this educational mission is the provision of outstanding medical care and services and the enhancement of new knowledge through clinical and basic biomedical research. Our mission is to educate and nurture health professionals who serve the health needs of Alabama, the nation, and the world through excellence in clinical medicine, research, education, and health care leadership.
To best educate the physicians of tomorrow, we have launched the School of Medicine new integrated curriculum, a project to continue to transform and to improve our medical education. Beginning with the entering 2007 medical school class, a new "integrated" curriculum is being implemented that focuses on teaching the basic sciences and is organized around organ systems rather than the traditional sciences disciplines.
The objective of this new curriculum is for students to learn basic sciences in a more clinically relevant context - teaching them to think comprehensively about organ function and diseases rather than simply memorize mountains of facts. Organ-based modules will be co-directed by basic scientists and clinicians.
